Presently the magnesium alloys are of great interest among the designers of aerospace engineering. The production of primary magnesium in the world is doubled and achieved 500-550 thousand tons per year for the last 10-15 years. Mg alloys are not only light-weight structural materials but they are left as the single competitor of structural plastics and Al medium-strength alloys by weight characteristics with the significant advantages:
- high specific strength and rigidity, good fatigue properties;
- stability of mechanical properties and dimensions during the long-term storage due to the natural ageing capability;
- operation ability within the wide temperature range from cryogenic (-70 ÷ -196°C) to high ones (short-term to 300-350°C, long-term to 200-250°C);
- high damping ability, good thermal and antinoise shielding a.o.
